Famous ballet music by Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky’s magnificent Pictures at an Exhibition sit alongside string quartets, piano trios and more, from Borodin and Rachmaninov to Glinka and Glazunov in this 9 day celebration of the very best chamber music from Russia’s greatest composers.
Presented by Music in the Round and their resident chamber group Ensemble 360 and guest artists, this festival is a chance for everyone of all ages to engage with music, whether that’s by coming to a concert, bringing your child to a workshop or just stumbling across great live music in the city.
Russia in the Round offers all of those things and more, with pop-up performances from local talent, a groundbreaking silent film from 1929 with a brand new soundtrack, a family concert featuring the timeless Peter and the Wolf, the chance for singers to perform with Ensemble 360 at the Cathedral, and you can even have a go at playing the sci-fi sounding theremin with guest artist, Lydia Kavina.
Immerse yourself in 1940s Russia on Saturday 6 May with music and drama in association with Sheffield Theatres. Three alternating players tell the story of Soviet Russia: recordings of political broadcasts spoken by Simon Russell Beale meet the brave words of poet Anna Akhmatova read by the brilliant actress Sara Kestelman, all set to the powerful music of celebrated composers such as Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Khachatuarian.
In amongst the Russian tunes, you’ll also find specially commissioned pieces from Sheffield contemporary composers, Platform 4, so you’ll be sure to discover something new – even if you’re a seasoned aficionado!
